There are now numerous cover versions of " The Sound Of Silence " . The most well-known is certainly the cover by the US metal band Disturbed of their album "Immortalized", which was released in 2015 and reached number two in the German singles charts and even reached the number one spot in Austria.
The piece was written by Paul Simon; it was first released in 1964 on the Simon & Garfunkel debut album «Wednesday Morning 3 AM». The album received only a moderate response. Nevertheless, the record label Columbia Records decided to produce an updated version of the song the following year. The song, which was originally accompanied only by Paul Simon's guitar, was turned into a rock song with electric guitar, bass and drums. The instruments were provided by studio musicians who had just recorded Bob Dylan's «Like A Rolling Stone». The result: «The Sound Of Silence» made it to the top one in the USA in 1966, and into the top ten in several European countries. Rolling Stone magazine lists it among the 500 best songs of all time.
Here is the version of the US a cappella group Pentatonix . The five-person formation is named after the pentatonic scale, a musical scale with five notes per octave. The five members during the recording of «The Sound Of Silence» (2019) are (from left): Matt Sallee, Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, Mitchell Grassi and Kevin Olusola. Pentatonix have now received three Grammys in the USA, sold over 10 million records, have almost 20 million YouTube subscribers and their most viewed videos have long since exceeded the one hundred million mark.
