Which was the first star cutout in BRAVO?
BRAVO dedicated its first celebrity feature to French actress and singer Brigitte Bardot (*1934). The eleven-part celebrity feature began in issue 13 of 1959 ; the final installment was published in issue 23. BRAVO wrote at the launch:
"What you see on the adjacent page are Brigitte Bardot's feet. They belong to a life-size picture of BB (Brigitte Bardot). From now on, BRAVO will publish Bardot's portions and small portions in every issue. If you collect, cut out, and paste all the pieces, you will one day have the entire, petite figure of France's living monument at home. 156cm Brigitte Bardot! So collect, cut out, and paste: Brigitte Bardot life-size!"
BRAVO drew attention to the star cutout right on the cover: " Brigitte Bardot – life-size, ready to cut out. " Readers and collectors worked their way up through issue 23 until the BB's head was finally delivered. Parallel to this, BRAVO had already launched a series on the film actress in issue 8. Title: "BB – Bombshell Bardot." Subtitle: "The hottest story for the coldest season!" The story of her life stretched through issue 20 , and in the final installment, BRAVO wrote: "That was the report on the career of Brigitte Bardot, the little Parisian girl who became a global star because she's more sparkling than French champagne."
Due to their great success, the celebrity cutouts remained one of the most important components for reader loyalty in BRAVO . In 1959, they were followed by Peter Kraus (15 parts, black and white, starting in issue 24 ), Cornelia 'Conny' Froboess (13 parts, colorized, starting in issue 40 ), and Elvis Presley (23 parts, colorized, starting in issue 52 ).
